Matching An Excavator To The Excavation

Digger hire in Glasgow starts with the work below ground and the room above it. A compact machine may pass through a restricted entrance but lack the reach or loading height your operation needs. A larger excavator may provide more output while needing stronger access, more working space and a different transport arrangement.

We take enquiries for mini diggers and larger excavators for business projects. Explain the intended trench depth, excavation dimensions, material and spoil loading method. Include whether the machine will work beside walls, structures, traffic routes or active areas of commercial premises.

Digger hire and excavator hire describe the same broad equipment category. For a 360 excavator, the rotating upper structure needs its own working envelope. Check tail swing, boom movement, bucket reach and the space needed to keep people outside the operating area.

Access, Ground And Attachments

Measure entrances and working corridors, including temporary fencing and any route shared with other contractors. Machine width can vary by model and track configuration. Request the dimensions of the proposed machine rather than using an approximate category as an access check.

Tell us about soft ground, finished surfaces and slopes. A suspended slab or underground structure requires assessment before plant travels over it. Do not rely on a photograph to establish ground bearing capacity or assume that tracked equipment can travel safely anywhere.

Bucket width should suit the trench or excavation profile. A breaker, grab or other attachment needs compatibility checks and may change the operating method. The operator must understand the coupling system and check attachment security in line with the equipment instructions.

Safe Digging And Site Duties

The HSE excavator guidance covers separation from people, competent operation and equipment condition. Agree an exclusion zone and a way to control entry. The site supervisor must consider visibility, nearby structures and other moving plant.

For buried services, HSE guidance HSG47 describes planning, locating and identifying services, and safe excavation. A machine booking is not permission to break ground. Relevant plans, detection work and a safe digging method need to be in place.

PUWER applies to the excavator as work equipment. If it is used for lifting loads, LOLER requirements may also apply to that operation and the equipment configuration. Ordinary digging is different from using an excavator to suspend a load, so declare lifting requirements at the enquiry stage.

Excavation support and safe access into a trench are separate planning matters. The HSE excavation guidance explains collapse prevention and inspection duties. Do not place spoil or machinery close to an excavation edge without an assessed safe arrangement.

The Hire Process

First, provide the site postcode, work dimensions, access measurements and requested dates. State whether you need a machine only or want to request an operator. Include attachments and tell us how excavated material will leave the working area.

Next, check the proposed specification, transport plan and hire terms. Confirm who will receive the excavator and where unloading can happen safely. Ask what operating information and inspection records are available for the machine and any lifting configuration.

At handover, record visible condition and confirm controls, emergency arrangements and attachment instructions. Daily checks and safe operation remain part of the site arrangements. Report defects and agree the response before continuing work with equipment that may be unsafe.

For completion, confirm the off-hire procedure and collection position. Cleanliness, fuel and attachments should be checked against the agreed terms. Keep the machine secure while it remains in your care.

What Changes The Hire Cost

Machine size, hire length, transport and attachments affect an excavator quotation. An operator, specialist tooling, fuel and cleaning may be additional items. Restricted delivery access can require a different transport plan, which should be discussed before a quote is accepted.

Compare the full task rather than machine rate alone. A machine that cannot load the planned skip or reach the required excavation may create avoidable changes. Send useful dimensions and explain uncertainty so suitability can be reviewed.

If spoil must travel across the site, include dumper hire in the same enquiry. For reinstatement, consider the required compaction equipment once the material and specification are known.

Digger & Excavator Hire Questions

What Size Digger Should I Hire?

Digger size should follow the required depth, reach, bucket capacity, ground conditions and access measurements. Send the narrowest opening and the available working space with your enquiry. The proposed machine’s actual dimensions and performance must be checked.

A nominal weight category alone cannot confirm that an excavator will fit or complete the task.

Can An Excavator Be Used For Lifting?

Excavator lifting needs a specific review of the machine, attachment, load and lifting operation. Tell us what must be lifted, its weight and the required radius before booking. Appropriate lifting equipment, planning and examination requirements may apply under LOLER.

A digging arrangement must not be treated as approval for lifting a suspended load.
